After a devastating accident, Sewanee Chester shifted her career from actress to audiobook narrator. Her newfound success allows her to care for her beloved, ailing grandmother. While Sewanee is up for narrating any book, she has no desire to narrate a romance. But Sewanee makes an exception with one romance book due to her affinity for the author and the money that can get her grandmother more help. Drunk on Love by Jasmine Guillory
Margot Noble feels no regrets about the one-night stand she had with a sexy stranger. She needed a stress release from the demands of running her family’s Napa Valley winery with her brother. That is, she has no regrets until that same stranger shows up for his new job at her winery. How long can Margot keep things professional before their attraction becomes too intoxicating?
I recommend pairing this book with a California wine like a buttery Chardonnay or a hearty Cabernet Sauvignon. The publication date for Drunk on Love is September 20, 2022.
Cozy Autumn Books for Adults

Where We Fall by Rochelle B. Weinstein
From the outside, Abby Holden appears to have it all. She’s a mom to a beautiful daughter and wife to a beloved football coach, Ryan. However, Abby suffers from severe depression. When Abby’s and Ryan’s long-time friend, Lauren Sheppard, returns, painful truths from the past emerge.
The story begins in 1997 with Ryan and Lauren as a couple. Then it leaps forward to 2014 with Ryan and Abby married with a daughter. What happened between those years may keep you turning pages faster than the falling leaves.
The Dutch House by Ann Patchett
Danny once lived with his sister Maeve in the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the surrounding countryside of Philadelphia. The Dutch House was a gift from Danny’s father to his wife. Danny’s father ascended from poverty to wealth in the years after World War II by growing a real estate empire. Now decades later, Danny and Maeve only truly have each other and their shared pain of being exiled from The Dutch House by their stepmother.
The Dutch House is a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. It’s received glowing reviews, endorsements, and celebrity book club features. Plus, Tom Hanks narrates the audiobook.
The Sparrow Sisters by Ellen Herrick
This modern-day fairy tale features the Sparrow Sisters, Sorrel, Nettie, and Patience, who live in the seaside picturesque New England town of Granite Point. Patience Sparrow, known as the town healer, becomes involved with a doctor new to the town. However, Patience soon finds herself implicated in a local tragedy that sets off extraordinary events and threatens the welfare of every resident of Granite Pointe.
The Sparrow Sisters has been compared to a mix of Practical Magic, Saving CeeCee Honeycutt, and the Witches of Eastwick. Discover the magic of this cozy autumn book!
Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
This bewitching novel follows the lives of the Owens sisters, Gillian and Sally, who live as outsiders in their Massachusetts hometown. Rumors of witchery, most likely due to their musty home, black cats, and strange concoctions, follow them wherever they go. Wishing to escape this identity, one sister marries, and one sister runs away. But they can’t stay away for long.
Maybe you saw the 1998 film, but have you read the book? Unlike the Owens women, who have been around for two hundred years, Practical Magic has been on shelves for twenty-five years, and still, it remains an autumn booklist favorite!
Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Glendy Vanderah
After her mother’s death, Joanna Teale decides to immerse herself in her graduate work by studying the nesting habits of birds. She’s soon interrupted by the appearance of a mysterious child wandering alone and covered in bruises. The girl calls herself Ursa and claims to be a visitor sent from the stars. She states that she’s here to witness five miracles before returning. Jo enlists the help of her neighbor, Gabriel Nash, to unravel the mystery of the girl’s life.
I read this book and couldn’t put it down. It’s so intriguing, and the ending left a glimmer of mystery. Get comfy with some hot apple cider for this story!
In the Night Wood by Dale Bailey
In the English countryside, among ancient oaks, sits the Hollow House. Husband and wife Charles and Erin moved here soon after the tragic loss of their young daughter. Erin inherited the house once owned by her ancestor, the author of a strange Victorian fairy tale, In the Night Wood. However, the house is not the refuge they were seeking. Instead, it’s haunted by the fairy tale, the forest, and the ghost of their daughter.
This gothic thriller may cause chills that have nothing to do with the frosty autumn air.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab
In 1714, Addie LaRue made a bargain for her life. In return for living forever, everyone Addie meets will forget her existence. For the next three hundred years, Addie travels the world and witnesses history. It’s always the same; she is here and then forgotten. One day, Addie interacts with a young man in a bookstore who remembers her name!
This bestseller in science fiction and fantasy may be one you won’t forget!
Autumn Light: Season of Fire and Farewells by Pico Iyer
In this biography, Pico Iyer recounts his return to his home in Japan after his father-in-law’s sudden death. As autumn descends in Japan with maple leaves turning red and falling temperatures, Iyer shares his experiences in his native culture. During his stay, Iyer reflects on his aging parents, his own empty nest, and his evolving relationship with his wife.
Recommended if you’re looking for a quiet, contemplative read to match summer’s farewell into fall.
Secrets, Lies and Apple Pies by Audry Fryer
Braeburn wasn’t supposed to see the message from her closest friend to her husband, but she did. Upset and driving in an unseasonably early snowstorm, Braeburn’s car careens off the road, leaving her with a brain injury and memory loss. Rather than returning home, Braeburn recovers at her family’s orchard. As she helps her sister, Gala, with her pie business, Braeburn works to uncover what really happened the day of her accident and what secret her husband is hiding.
Full disclosure – I wrote this novel in 2014. It’s an excellent read for the fall, especially with the setting at a centuries-old Pennsylvania apple orchard. Also, I recommend reading it while indulging in a slice of apple pie.
